What is Stuttering?

Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental speech condition characterized by involuntary disruptions in the forward flow of speech. It may also be accompanied by physical tension, negative feelings, and avoidance. But each individual’s experience with stuttering is unique—no two people who stutter are exactly alike.

At VoiceOver, we believe stuttering doesn't make a voice any less worthy; it is a form of verbal diversity. Every individual we work with brings a valuable perspective, and we’re here to support you as you navigate your journey.

Supporting Effective Communication

At VoiceOver Speech Pathology, we strive to affirm voices and identities through collaborative, evidence-based speech therapy rooted in compassion, self-determination, and holistic care.

We believe every voice is valid, and that communication should feel empowering—not performative or restricted. This philosophy guides how we approach stuttering therapy. Because stuttering is a highly individualized experience, evaluation and therapy approaches must reflect its multidimensional nature and be tailored to each person’s unique experience.

How Stuttering is Evaluated

The purpose of the evaluation is to understand the nature of your stuttering, its impact on daily life, and what you hope to gain from therapy.

Stuttering therapy is dynamic and person-centered, meaning goals may evolve over time based on your changing needs and experiences.

Your SLP may gather information about:

  • Your speech and communication patterns
  • Any previous speech therapy experiences
  • Developmental and speech/language history
  • Family history of stuttering or other speech/language concerns
  • The impact of stuttering in daily life

You may also be asked to complete questionnaires or surveys to help the SLP better understand your (or your child’s) experience with stuttering in everyday life. In addition, the SLP will listen to your speaking patterns to better understand your stuttering and rule out other fluency conditions.

Finally, the evaluation is an opportunity for you to learn more about the SLP’s approach. You deserve to feel affirmed, supported, and empowered in the therapy space!

Our Approach to Stuttering Therapy

The goal of therapy is to support the development of communication that feels effective, authentic, and fulfilling.

  • How the speech system works
  • Tools to reduce physical tension while speaking
  • Thoughts and feelings related to speech and stuttering
  • Feared or challenging speaking situations
  • Self-advocacy and communication empowerment
  • Community resources and support networks

FAQ: Stuttering & Fluency Disorder Therapy

Who should consider stuttering therapy?
If stuttering feels like it’s getting in the way of daily activities, meaningful participation, or your quality of life—or if speaking feels uncomfortable or physically effortful—speech therapy may be helpful. If you’re a parent or caregiver and have concerns about how stuttering may be affecting your child’s communication or confidence, seeking support from a speech-language pathologist is recommended.
Success in stuttering therapy looks different for everyone. Some people may want to explore tools to navigate moments of stuttering more easily, while others may focus on building confidence, reducing avoidance, or feeling more comfortable in communication. Our role is to support your goals without judgment or comparison. A range of tools can be used to help reflect on progress in therapy.

For stuttering therapy, a doctor’s referral is not required.

Stuttering and fluency therapy begins with a comprehensive evaluation to obtain information about your communication patterns, speech and language history, and your experiences in everyday life.

Your speech language pathologist will also listen to your speaking patterns to evaluate for any other fluency conditions. At VoiceOver Speech Pathology, our work is personalized and person-centered. This initial evaluation is vital to formulate a treatment plan that meets your goals and needs. Comprehensive evaluations are $500.
